The Bernese Mountain Dog was first brought into Switzerland over 2000 years ago to an area called Berne. There, his name is Berner Sennenhund. This big sweet dog was originally a draft dog, but was also used for helping with sheep and cattle drives. Of the four types of Swiss mountain dogs, only the Bernese Mountain Dog has the long silky coat. Although sometimes shy, they love children and are exceptionally faithful to their owners making them wonderful helper dogs for the disabled. Their thick coat encourages a love of cool weather.
This tri-color dog is mainly black with rust over his eyes, cheeks, on the sides of the chest, on the legs and under the tail. He always has a white mark in the shape of a cross on his chest. Standing height at the shoulder ranges from 22.5 to 27.5 inches. The breed standards suggest a weight of 80 to 100 pounds.
